Workers exposed to asbestos at Derby building site

 A contractor has been prosecuted for exposing workers to asbestos in Derby.

Wayne Priestley, 47, of The Beeches, Lincoln Road, Tuxford, Nottinghamshire, had been employed to remove asbestos-containing materials from the former Allens Printers building in Webster Street ahead of its demolition.

 FLY-tippers who left asbestos in a South Tyneside country lane were blasted for putting the lives of people and animals at risk.
Council officials are asking for help to track down those responsible for the “disgraceful” dumping of asbestos cement at the side of a road in West Pastures, West Boldon,
It is the sixth case of asbestos being abandoned in the borough in the past two months, and the second in the West Pastures area.

This year's White Van Roadshow is focusing on preventing workplace falls after six workers were killed and there were more than 500 major injuries in the region in 2009/10.

Asbestos caused cancer death of 45yr old ex-painter.

A 45-YEAR-OLD who trained as a painter and decorator died of asbestos-related cancer, an inquest heard.

Frank Skidmore, of Salkeld Place, Chell Heath, struggled to get medics to believe he was in pain for years before he was diagnosed with terminal cancer in 2007.

He had completed a two-year training scheme in painting and decorating when he was a teenager, working with artex containing asbestos.

Mr Skidmore died at home on March 1.

Asbestos on shirt woman dies of cancer

A 44-year-old woman has lost her battle against a cancer she believed was caused by asbestos dust on her grandfather's work clothes. Mother-of-two Debra Stevenson, of Plymouth, was diagnosed with mesothelioma in December 2008. She died on 5 December this year. She believed she could have contracted the lung cancer from contact with her grandfather Jack Duffin, when she was a child. He died aged 86 about 10 years ago from a different disease which was related to asbestos and smoking. Her illness could also have been caused by dislodging asbestos while decorating, she had said.

UK will tighten too weak asbestos law

 The UK version of a European Union-wide law on asbestos safety is to be amended after the European Commission (EC) ruled it is illegally lax. In a 28 April statement to the trade union magazine Hazards, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) 'confirmed its agreement' with the EC's finding that the UK had actually under-implemented Europe's asbestos law.

Asbestos warning sent to locals in the Pilton area

 An asbestos warning was sent to locals in the Pilton area of Edinburgh after a fire broke out at an old nursery.

The empty building on West Pilton Grove was reported to be on fire at approximately 7.44pm on Sunday.

Five fire appliances, and support vehicles, extinguished the flames after about an hour.

While no casualties were reported, Lothian and Borders Police advised local residents to stay indoors and keep their windows and doors closed due to the possibility of asbestos in the building.
