Threats To UK Swimming Pools
August 2022
Soaring energy costs and a shortage of chemicals are a double threat to UK swimming pools and leisure facilities.
Up to 79% of public leisure facilities say that without financial support that they are ‘likely’ or ‘extremely likely’ to cease operations within the next six months according to a survey carried out by ukactive of its members.
They asked public leisure operators about the impact on their facilities if there is no financial support to mitigate against the increases and projected increases to energy costs over the coming months.

Now a coalition of leading bodies in the physical activity sector has written to the Government calling for urgent support to save leisure facilities from going under as they face a rise in energy costs of up to 150% on last year.

In addition to the rising energy costs there has also been a knock-on effect to the sector of sourcing chemicals due supply chain issues as a result of Covid-19. With restrictions seriously affecting the movement of containers and goods worldwide. Added to this In August 2020, Hurricane Laura caused a fire at the largest Trichlor factory in the US. The factory shut down with the loss of 100,000 tons of stabilised chlorine products per year.
The full extent of supply chain issues can be found in the article recently published by PWTAG.
